Ethylene oxide in packaging and food contact materials
The test includes an analysis of ethylene oxide content and a computational specific migration determination by assuming 100 % migration.
Ethylene oxide (CAS 75-21-8; Ref No 17020; FCM 129) is a highly volatile substance used to manufacture materials including polyurethane foam and PET. It may be used in food contact materials subject to certain restrictions.
Regulation (EU) 10/2011 on plastic food contact materials sets restrictions for ethylene oxide content (QM) and migration (SML). The content limit is 1 mg/kg, and the migration limit is ND (not-detectable) with a detection limit of 0.01 mg/kg.
