Glutaraldehyde is a slimicide used to control microbial growth in paper and paperboard packaging. Its use in food packaging is allowed according to BfR XXXVI, however, no more than 2 mg of glutaraldehyde must be detectable in 1 kg of the finished product.

Testing for the release of primary aromatic amines (PAA) classified as CMR 1A or 1B according to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008. Extraction is performed with either cold water (EN 645) or hot water (EN 647). Testing is relevant for materials and products containing, for example: polyurethane-based sizing agents, recycled fibers, azo dyes. Per the current regulations, the detection limit is 0.002 mg/kg for individual PAAs; the detection limit for the sum of PAAs is 0.01 mg/kg.

Acrylamide (CAS: 79-06-1) is used in certain sizing and retention agents in the production of fiber-based food packaging. It is classified as a potential human carcinogen, and its migration into food is restricted under several EU and national regulations. A migration limit of 0.01 mg/kg was recently introduced for acrylamide release from paper- and board-based food contact materials by the latest version of German BfR recommendation XXXVI (October 2025). The same limit also applies to migration from plastic food contact materials under Regulation (EU) No 10/2011. Specific migration from plastics or rubber can be determined using several food simulants. Paper and board, for which conventional migration testing is not suitable, are analyzed using aqueous or solvent extractions (EN 645, EN 647, EN 15519).

Determination of isothiazolinones in consumer goods. Isothiazolinones are common preservatives (biocides) in cosmetics, chemical formulations, and printing inks. Determination of certain aromatic amines derived from azo dyes in accordance with the standard EN 14362-1. If aniline is detected above 5 mg/kg according to EN 14362-1, then the presence of 4-aminoazobenzene releasing colorants shall be tested according to EN 14362-3. Determination of the total organic fluorine (TOF) content in combustible materials using combustion ion chromatography (CIC). By default, TOF is analyzed as total fluorine (TF). If required, total inorganic fluorine (TIF) can be measured as well, and TOF calculated as the difference between TF and TIF. TOF analysis gives information about the total amount of organic fluorinated compounds. It can also be used to evaluate the presence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the material, even though individual PFAS compounds can't be analyzed with this method. Alkyl ketene dimers (AKD) are used as hydrophobic sizing agents in paper and board to improve water resistance. However, AKDs not bound by the fiber matrix can hydrolyse into dialkyl ketones (DAKs).
